Horn-driven Blues, Muscle Shoals & Memphis Soul, Gulf Coast R&B, roadhouse / roots rock
Way back in the year 2001, Mike Foster (tenor sax/keyboards) and I were renting a house on Rosedale Ave
in Nashville and working on the road with Eddy Raven. We decided that it would be big fun to form a big
horn band! Since neither of us felt the world needed to hear yet another rendition of "Mustang Sally",
we selected some of the coolest Blues & Soul tunes from my old vinyl collection and worked up arrangements. ("All of the B-sides and none of the hits" might not have been the quickest route to financial success,
but as I stated, our main goal was just to have some fun)!
After pitching the idea to our friends, we were able to enlist guitarist, Steve Cirkvencic, Dickie Thompson (Steve Miller Band, Boz Scaggs) on Hammond B3, Gregg Wetzel (The Nighthawks) on piano and Gary Link (Steppenwolf, Rita Coolidge) on bass as well as a mighty horn section:
"The Frog" Jimmy Sharp / trombone and Tom McGinley / baritone sax (who, along with Wayne Jackson of
The Memphis Horns, comprised the horn section for artists such as Neil Young) plus Scott Kinney and
Gerry Snoddy on trumpets.
Our band concept was influenced by the great R&B revues of the 60's, which featured multiple vocalists.
We enlisted Jerry Middleton (Tyrone Smith Revue), the "hurricane" from Hurricane Mills, Tennessee,
Frankie Lee and Grammy-nominated recording artist / Detroit soul man, Amyl Justin to front the band.
And finally, adding the sweet and soulful harmony are singer/songwriter Cat Miller and session vocalist, Cindy Shelton.
When the band's line-up was complete, we initially spent most of our time playing in "the woodshed"
on Rosedale Ave (hence the band name).
Eventually, we began entertaining audiences in Nashville clubs like 3rd & Lindsley, Bourbon Street Blues and Boogie Bar, The Boardwalk and BB King's and then in venues throughout Tennessee and the Southeast region.
As the group's songwriters started writing material for the band, we began incorporating original material
into our shows, along with our renditions of songs originally recorded by artists like Ann Peebles, Bobby Bland, Etta James and Ray Charles. Which brings us to today:
We're pleased to announce the release of our debut album, "RHYTHM METHOD" on Philly Dog Records. RHYTHM METHOD showcases The Rosedale Revue playing a variety of musical styles, from Kansas City Jump to Muscle Shoals Soul and Gulf Coast R&B. (It even includes a Memphis style arrangement of Jimi Hendrix' Band Of Gypsies rocker, "Message To Love"). Besides the 15 band members, featured on the album are two of our special guests. The legendary Cajun accordion player Jo-El Sonnier adds a Mardi Gras flavor to the song, "What About Me". On the song "Congratulations, I Suppose", Bayou-Country hit maker Eddy Raven re-visits
the Swamp-Pop R&B he sang, growing up in South Louisiana. RHYTHM METHOD includes songs composed by the band members as well as our renditions of songs originally performed by Bobby Blue Bland, Etta James, Ray Charles and Jimi Hendrix.
RHYTHM METHOD is available here on the website as a digital download or a physical copy CD.
It is also available through your favorite retailer (I-Tunes, Amazon, CD Baby)
